The 2009 World Series of Poker

Although to many it may seem like Peter Eastgate just won the World Series of Poker, believe it or not, the 2009 WSOP is right around the corner. The poker tournament series this year spreads over three months, starting in May and ending in July.
The Early Events of the 2009 WSOP
The first event, as is tradition, is the Casino Employees Event. This takes place on May 27th and is a $500 no limit hold’em event, open exclusively to casino employees. This is followed by the spectacular 40th anniversary $40,000 No Limit Hold’em event, which made big poker news when it was announced. It’s likely to be attended by only a handful of pros, however, due to the big price tag. The next day, Friday, May 29th, features a $1,500 Omaha hi/lo split event. The first event likely to feature a massive field is the following two days, May 30th and May 31st, which offers the $1000 No limit hold’em event. The relatively small price tag means thousands of entrants are expected to register for one of the first two days of play. The tournament will be concluded on June 2nd.
Middle Events of the 2009 WSOP
Some of the other exciting events of the 2009 WSOP include the $5000 No limit hold’em event on June 6th and the $10,000 Omaha hi/lo championship on June 7th. Poker fans will also have June 26th marked on their calendar, as this marks the first day of the five day $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. championship, an event many people consider to be the true world poker championship in modern day poker.
The Main Event of the 2009 WSOP
Of course, the event everyone is waiting for is the $10,000 no limit hold’em main event. Last year, Dane Peter Eastgate took home the crown, making him the youngest winner in history at age 22. Eastgate won out in a field of 6844 taking home over nine million dollars. This year, a comparable size field is expected, and four legs of “first day” play will take place from July 3rd to July 6th. The final nine will be decided on July 15th and this “November Nine” will return on November 7th to play for the championship.
